In Loving Memory
November 20, 1919 - October 13, 2006
Doris Bardon, author, pianist, sculptor, and art collector, was a genius at bringing people together, linking them in causes dear to her heart, the arts, politics, and the environment.
The countless meetings held in her home, her friends who relied on her counsel, the many organizations she helped create or worked with: The Center for Modern Art, Gainesville Chamber Orchestra, Acrosstown Repertory Theatre, Gainesville Association for the Creative Arts, League of Women Voters, Women for Wise Growth, Arts Association of Alachua County, Gainesville Pen Women, Stop! Children's Cancer, Writing the Region, the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Writers Workshop, and our local public radio station, to name just a few, all miss her special touch.
Most of all, we miss the enthusiasm she brought to every endeavor, whether encouraging and supporting a political candidate, urging government to support the arts, or working to help keep and create a clean and healthy environment for all of us. We miss her friendship, keen ideas, her humor, and we miss the sense of community she gave to each of us, that marvelous shared feeling of belonging, whether to a group as a friend or an ally.
It is this principle of citizenship that Doris wanted to leave us by creating a community cultural center. As usual, her larger vision will move us?this time from her living room to a place where all of Alachua County can find a home for the arts.
